CBN (Cannabinol)

Also known as: cannabinol, the sleepy cannabinoid

Last reviewed:

What it is

CBN is what THC becomes when it sits exposed to air and light over time. In aged hemp flower, small amounts of CBN accumulate alongside the original CBD and other cannabinoids. It's the cannabinoid that's gotten the most attention in the "CBD for sleep" conversation because early research suggests CBN has more directly sedative effects than CBD on its own.

Most of CBN's reputation as "the sleepy cannabinoid" actually traces back to one 1970s study that wasn't designed to isolate CBN's effects — recent research is mixed on whether CBN alone produces meaningful sedation. What does seem true: CBN combined with CBD in a full-spectrum extract often feels stronger for sleep than CBD alone, possibly because of the entourage effect rather than CBN's individual sedative properties.

botanCBD's full-spectrum line preserves the trace CBN that naturally develops in our hemp. We don't sell isolated CBN products because the science isn't yet strong enough to justify pricing them as a separate sleep aid.

FAQ

Is CBN psychoactive?

CBN has very mild psychoactive potential at high isolated doses, but at the trace amounts present in full-spectrum CBD it's not intoxicating. The CBN itself is the oxidation product of THC.

Does broad-spectrum CBD have CBN?

Usually a small amount, depending on the extraction process. Broad-spectrum CBD is processed to remove THC, and that process can also reduce CBN, but trace amounts often survive.

Should I look for a CBN-specific product for sleep?

If plain CBD isn't giving you enough sleep effect, a CBD+CBN blend is a reasonable next step. Several competitors sell these. For most users, our full-spectrum 1,500mg is enough — the entourage effect from the full cannabinoid profile is often what does the work.
