Homeostasis (and the Endocannabinoid System)
Also known as: Internal balance, Physiological balance
Homeostasis is the process by which a living body keeps internal conditions such as temperature, fluid levels, and energy supply within a narrow, workable range, and researchers describe the endocannabinoid system as one of the signaling networks involved in that regulation.
Homeostasis comes from Greek words for "similar" and "steady." Think of a thermostat. Your body senses a change, sends a signal, and adjusts to bring things back toward a set range. Body temperature, blood sugar, hydration, and appetite all work this way. It is not a fixed point so much as a constant series of small corrections.
ECS explainers use the word because the endocannabinoid system is a signaling network that appears to take part in those corrections. The body makes its own endocannabinoids, receptors on cells receive them, and enzymes break them down once the message is delivered. Leafly's overview (checked October 2026) describes the ECS as helping the body stay in a "Goldilocks zone," and that is the common shorthand across the field.
Here is where we stay careful. Saying the ECS takes part in homeostasis is a description of research. Saying CBD "restores balance" is a hypothesis, and we do not know that it is true for any one person. Plant cannabinoids interact with this system in ways scientists are still mapping, mostly in lab and early human studies. Be cautious with any brand that states it as settled fact, and talk to your doctor before changing a routine.
