Synthetic Cannabinoid (vs Converted Cannabinoid)

Also known as: Semi-synthetic cannabinoid, Converted cannabinoid

Definition

A synthetic cannabinoid is a cannabinoid-like compound made in a lab, while a converted (semi-synthetic) cannabinoid is one made by chemically changing a plant cannabinoid such as CBD, and neither is the same as a phytocannabinoid the hemp plant makes on its own.

Synthetic Cannabinoid (vs Converted Cannabinoid) shown alongside related glossary terms: Delta-8 THC, Phytocannabinoid.

There are three buckets. Fully synthetic compounds, the K2 and Spice type, are built from scratch in a lab and have no connection to hemp. They can be far stronger than delta-9 THC, which is why they sit in a different legal and safety category altogether. Semi-synthetic or converted cannabinoids start with a plant molecule, usually CBD pulled from hemp, and use acids, solvents, or catalysts to rearrange it into something else, such as delta-8 THC or HHC. Plant-derived cannabinoids are the ones the plant makes itself and that are extracted and purified without changing their structure.

This is the line state lawmakers keep drawing. Delta-8, delta-10, and HHC occur in hemp in tiny amounts, so the products on shelves are mostly made by conversion. A legal alert from the law firm Barclay Damon (read October 2026) describes these as often "synthesized by converting CBD," which in its reading makes them synthetic cannabinoids under federal controlled substance law. Some states now write the same idea into hemp rules, barring cannabinoids made through synthesis or isomerization. Rules differ a lot by state and change often, so check yours.

botanCBD sells plant-derived hemp extract only. Our four products are made from hemp grown on our Kentucky and Ohio farms, extracted, and tested every batch. We do not sell delta-8, HHC, or any converted cannabinoid. The batch COA shows what is in the bottle, and you can ask for yours at /coas. If a label lists a cannabinoid you cannot find in a plain hemp plant profile, ask the brand how it was made.
