CBD for Pets: Dogs, Cats, Serving Sizes by Weight, and the Vet Conversation

Updated How we edit these guides
Pets: cannabinoid spotlight on CBD with 0.0% THC, with a typical dosing protocol.

Our picks for pets

Why this works

Dogs and cats are not small people. Their bodies handle cannabinoids differently, and THC is toxic to both. That is why we make one product for animals and do not suggest sharing the human bottle. Ours is broad-spectrum hemp extract with 0.0% THC, in organic coconut-derived MCT oil, with an AAFCO-approved bacon flavor, formulated with a veterinarian.

The honest research picture is mixed. A May 2024 Knowable Magazine piece (carried by Scientific American, which we read in October 2026) says studies on dogs are still mixed, research on cats is especially scarce, and pet CBD products are often inconsistent. In one study it cites of 29 hemp products, more than half were outside the advertised CBD amount by 10 percent or more. So we do not make promises about what CBD does for your pet. We tell you what is in the bottle and what we test.

Use it as a routine, not a rescue. Give the same serving at the same time each day for two or three days, watch your pet, and only then change anything. If you are unsure, your veterinarian can set the number. Their advice beats any chart, including ours.

Cannabinoid spotlight

CBD with 0.0% THC

THC is the cannabinoid that makes people high, and it is toxic to dogs and cats. A pet product should have none of it, and the bottle should say so. Our pet oil is broad-spectrum: the plant's other compounds are kept, the THC is removed, and the batch lab report is available at /coas. Check the label and the lab report on any pet CBD you buy, because labels are not tightly policed.

How to take it for pets

Start low, once a day, on food or straight in the mouth. Our oil is 16.7 mg of CBD per mL. A reasonable starting range is 0.1 to 0.25 mg per pound of body weight, beginning at the low end. Starting serving by weight: 10 lb cat or small dog, about 1 mg (0.06 mL). 25 lb dog, about 2.5 mg (0.15 mL). 50 lb dog, about 5 mg (0.3 mL). 75 lb dog, about 7.5 mg (0.45 mL). 100 lb dog, about 10 mg (0.6 mL). Hold the same serving for two or three days before raising it slowly. These are starting points from our own product page, not veterinary advice. Ask your veterinarian first.

FAQ

Can I give my dog CBD oil made for humans?

We do not suggest it. Human oils can contain trace THC, which is toxic to dogs and cats, and they are stronger and flavored for people. Use an oil made for animals with 0.0% THC, and ask your veterinarian before starting.

Is CBD for cats different from CBD for dogs?

The oil is the same, the research is not. Studies in dogs are more common, and research in cats is especially scarce. Cats are small, so the serving is tiny. A 10 lb cat starts around 1 mg, about 0.06 mL of our pet oil. Ask your veterinarian before giving it to a cat.

How much CBD oil should I give my dog by weight?

A reasonable starting range is 0.1 to 0.25 mg per pound once a day, beginning at the low end. A 50 lb dog starts near 5 mg, about 0.3 mL of our 16.7 mg/mL oil. Your veterinarian's number replaces ours.

How do I give CBD oil to my pet?

Put the serving on a bit of food or a small snack your pet already likes, or squirt it straight in the mouth if your pet allows. Straight in the mouth is faster, about 15 to 30 minutes. Mixed into peanut butter or wet food takes about 45 to 60 minutes. Use the same method each day.

When should I stop giving my pet CBD?

Stop and call your veterinarian if your pet seems unusually sleepy, has an upset stomach, or just seems off. Unusual sleepiness and stomach upset are the things to watch for. Tell the vet what you gave and when, and bring the bottle.

What does AAFCO-approved flavor mean?

It means the bacon flavoring is a pet-food-grade ingredient, not human flavoring reused. It says nothing about the CBD itself. For the CBD, look at the 0.0% THC label and the batch lab report.
