Epidiolex
Also known as: Epidiolex (cannabidiol) oral solution
Pronunciation: /EP-ih-dye-OH-lex/
Epidiolex is the only prescription medicine whose active ingredient is purified plant-derived CBD, approved by the FDA in 2018 and made by GW Pharmaceuticals, now part of Jazz Pharmaceuticals.
Epidiolex is a liquid taken by mouth. A doctor prescribes it, and it is approved for two rare pediatric conditions and one genetic condition. It went through the full drug process: controlled human trials, a fixed formulation, a set dose, and a label that lists side effects and drug interactions. The FDA's own consumer page on CBD calls it the FDA's one approved CBD drug product, and says other CBD products have not been evaluated by the agency (checked October 2026).
That is why Epidiolex does not turn store CBD into a medicine. The approval covers one specific product, for specific people, under a prescriber's care. It does not carry over to hemp oils, gummies or salves, which are not made to a drug standard and are not prescribed for anything. We sell hemp products, not medicine, and we make no medical claims about them. Anyone using Epidiolex should keep taking it as prescribed and talk to their doctor before adding any other CBD.
Epidiolex also shows how far apart the two categories sit. A prescription drug has one formula and one dose, and a regulator checked both. A hemp product has a label, a batch number and a lab report you can read for yourself. That is why we publish a certificate of analysis for every batch at /coas and tell you to read it. If you take any prescription medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist before you start a hemp product.
