What the DOT tests for, and what it has said about CBD

DOT-regulated drivers are tested for marijuana, not for CBD. The test looks for a THC metabolite. The DOT's Office of Drug and Alcohol Policy and Compliance put out guidance on this in February 2020. We read it as reproduced in an Idealease safety bulletin (checked October 2026). It makes three points. The DOT tests for marijuana and not CBD. Labels on many CBD products may be misleading, because the product could contain more THC than the label says. And Part 40 does not authorize marijuana use for any reason.

The line drivers should read twice: CBD use is not a legitimate medical explanation for a laboratory-confirmed marijuana positive. Medical Review Officers verify a test confirmed at the appropriate cutoffs as positive, even if you say you only used a CBD product. The same guidance tells safety-sensitive employees to exercise caution. We could not load the DOT's own notice page this run, so we are quoting it through that bulletin. Read the original before you decide.

Your carrier may have already decided for you

Plenty of carriers go further than the federal rule and ban CBD products outright, whether or not they contain THC. A written company policy can end a job even when the test comes back clean. Drive My Way, a driver job platform, calls CBD "not a risk worth taking" for drivers (checked October 2026). That is their view, not a rule, but it is a common one.

So the first step is not a product. Ask your safety department or your DOT program manager whether CBD is allowed, and get the answer in writing. If the answer is no, you are done, and we would rather lose the sale than cost you a CDL.

Why full-spectrum is the wrong bottle for a driver

Full-spectrum oil is legal because it stays at or under 0.3% delta-9 THC. Legal and test-safe are different things. A trace amount taken every day can add up, and a screen does not care whether the THC came from hemp. Our full-spectrum oil reads trace THC on purpose. For a driver, that is the wrong bottle.

Our salve stick is total-spectrum, so it also carries trace THC. Topicals are not a meaningful bloodstream route, but we are not going to hand a CDL holder a product with THC in it and call that fine. It also reads sold out right now.

If your carrier says yes: THC-free broad-spectrum, at home

Broad-spectrum oil is made with the THC removed. Ask for the batch COA and look at the THC line. You want ND or <LOQ, not a vague "under 0.3%." Hemp is from our Kentucky and Ohio farms, third-party tested every batch, and the report matches the batch number on your bottle. We cannot promise your lab's cutoff or a confirmatory test. Drive My Way also notes that even "THC-free" claims are hard to verify across the market, which is why the paperwork matters more than the label.

Keep the COA with the bottle, in the house, not in the cab. A paper trail will not overturn a positive. It does show you did your homework if a question comes up.

A home-time-only routine

Never use any new product on the road, before a drive, or inside the window before a random. A new serving is a variable, and you cannot test yourself against a DOT panel. Home time is the place to try it, if you try it at all. Most adults start at 10 to 25 mg. The 500mg bottle is about 17 mg per full dropper. Start low, go slow, and talk to your doctor first.

Our honest read: if you are an over-the-road driver with a hard-line carrier, or a license you cannot afford to risk, this page may end with "skip it." If you are a local driver with a carrier that has said yes in writing, the broad-spectrum 500mg bottle is the one to look at.

FAQ

Can truck drivers use CBD?

The DOT tests for marijuana, not CBD, but it has said CBD is not a legitimate medical explanation for a positive THC result. Many carriers also ban CBD outright. The safest answer is to ask your carrier in writing before you buy anything.

Will CBD show up on a DOT drug test?

A DOT panel looks for THC, not CBD. A product that contains THC, including legal full-spectrum hemp oil, could produce a positive. Labels can be wrong. No brand can guarantee a DOT panel, and we will not.

What is the best CBD for a CDL holder?

If your carrier allows CBD, THC-free broad-spectrum oil with a batch COA reading ND or <LOQ for THC. Our THC-free broad-spectrum oil is the only botanCBD bottle we would suggest, and only for use at home.

Can I tell the MRO that I only used CBD?

That will not change the outcome. DOT guidance says CBD use is not a legitimate medical explanation for a laboratory-confirmed marijuana positive, and Medical Review Officers verify such a test as positive.

Should I keep the lab report with the bottle?

Yes. Keep the batch COA that matches your bottle's batch number at home. It shows what was in the product. It is not a waiver and it will not overturn a positive.

Does botanCBD guarantee I will pass a DOT test?

No. Nobody can. Our broad-spectrum oil is made with THC removed and the COA reads ND or <LOQ, but your carrier's policy and your lab's cutoff are out of our hands.
