Pick by use case

Pick CBD Balm if…
  • You want a firmer product that stays put and does not smear
  • You carry it in a gym bag, a pocket or a cold garage
  • You do not mind a waxy film on the skin
Pick CBD Salve if…
  • You want something that spreads with little pressure
  • You like a lighter feel after applying
  • You are applying it to a larger patch of skin and want it to glide

The only real difference is wax

Both are made the same way: melt wax into oils, stir in the hemp extract, let it set. Neither contains water. The one dial the maker turns is how much wax goes in. In a how-to on the subject, Homestead and Chill says the main difference is that salves are slightly softer and balms a bit firmer, and that many makers use the two terms interchangeably (checked October 2026: homesteadandchill.com/make-salve-or-balms-recipe-101).

That same page gives a rough home-recipe guide of one part beeswax to three to five parts oil. Less oil per part wax gives you a firmer result. A commercial CBD maker may use other waxes, butters and ratios, so read that as an illustration of the idea, not a spec for any brand.

Why the labels are inconsistent

No agency defines "balm" or "salve" for CBD products, so the choice is marketing. Lists of CBD topicals mix them freely; a GreenState guide to CBD creams and salves (checked October 2026) puts "balm" and "salve" products side by side in the same list. Firmness varies as much within each word as between them.

So read past the name. Look for water or aqua near the top of the ingredients: if it is there, you have a cream or lotion. If the list is oils, wax and butters, you have a balm or salve, and the only way to know how firm it is is to press a thumb into one. For the cream side of this, see our salve vs cream comparison.

How to compare two of them fairly

Do the division. Total milligrams of CBD over the size of the container, in mL or ounces. Our stick is 750mg in 30 mL, which is 25mg per mL. Anything with a bigger number on the front but a bigger tin may work out lower per mL.

Then ask for the batch lab report, the same as you would for an oil. A topical with no current third-party report gives you a number on the label and nothing to check it against. Add-ins such as arnica, menthol or essential oils are what people most often react to, so test a small patch first and keep it off broken skin.

Where botanCBD sits, plainly

Our one topical is a twist-up stick: 750mg of total-spectrum hemp extract with Arnica montana in 30 mL, $35. We call it a salve. It is a stick, so it is on the firm side of the range, which shows how loose the words are. As we write this in October 2026 it is sold out, and we would rather say so than send you to a page you cannot buy from.

While it is out, our round-up of CBD salves and topicals names other brands' balms and salves. If you want something in stock that fits a daily routine, our THC-free broad-spectrum drops are taken under the tongue, not on skin, so they are a different format and not a swap. Our salve vs oil comparison explains the trade-off.

FAQ

What is the difference between a CBD balm and a CBD salve?

Usually the amount of wax. A CBD balm has more wax, so it is firmer and sits on the skin. A CBD salve has less, so it is softer and spreads more easily. Both are oil and wax with no water, and brands use the two words loosely, so check the ingredients.

Is CBD balm stronger than CBD salve?

No. Strength is the milligrams of CBD divided by the container size, not the word on the label. Compare mg per mL or per ounce and check the batch lab report.

Is a CBD sports balm different from a CBD salve?

Not by definition. "Sports balm" is a marketing name. Some contain menthol or camphor for a cooling feel, and some do not. Read the ingredients and any Drug Facts panel to see what is in it.

What is a CBD arnica balm?

A balm or salve that adds Arnica montana, a flower extract, to the oil and wax base. Arnica is for skin only and should never be swallowed or put on broken skin. Our stick is an arnica product, sold out as of October 2026.

Does a CBD balm or salve have water in it?

No. Both are oil and wax. If water or aqua is near the top of the ingredient list, the product is a cream or lotion, whatever the front of the container says.

How long does a CBD balm or salve last?

With no water in the mix they keep well, but there is no single number. Go by the date printed on the container and store it somewhere cool, out of the sun.

Does botanCBD sell a CBD balm?

We sell one topical, a 750mg arnica CBD salve stick, 30 mL, $35. It is sold out as of October 2026. We do not make a tin balm, cream or roll-on.
