What to pack: bottle, lid, and heat

Bring the smallest bottle you will finish. Our oils come in 30 mL dropper bottles, so you do not need to decant into something else. Tighten the dropper cap, put the bottle in a small zip bag, and keep it inside your pack, not on the outside where it bakes.

Heat and pressure are the two trail hazards. Do not leave the bottle in a hot car, on a dashboard, or in a pack lid in direct sun. Altitude change can push a little oil past a loose cap, which is why the zip bag earns its place. We have no lab data on how a bottle behaves after days in a hot pack, so keep it cool and out of the sun.

A simple trail routine

Most adults start at 10 to 25 mg per serving. On the 500mg bottle that is about a half to a full dropper, held under the tongue. Pick the time of day you will use it, try it at home first, and do not make a remote ridge the place you find out how a new serving feels.

Many people take it at camp after the packs are down, not mid-climb. That is a routine, not a promise about what it will do. Start low, go slow, and talk to your doctor if you take medication or have a medical condition.

Crossing state lines and entering parks

Hemp CBD at or under 0.3% delta-9 THC is federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill, and we ship to all 50 states. States still write their own rules, and a THC-free product keeps the trailhead conversation simple. Our CBD laws page has the state-by-state detail.

National parks, forests, and other federal land are a separate question. We did not find an nps.gov page that settles it for hemp CBD, so we will not guess. Ask the park or land manager before your trip, and keep the bottle in its original labeled packaging with the batch number visible.

Bears and scented items

The National Park Service says bears consider anything with a scent to be food, and its list includes soaps, cosmetics, toiletries, sunscreen, bug repellant, and fuel (nps.gov, checked October 2026). It does not name CBD oil or salve.

Our MCT oils with mint or lime essential oil, and a salve stick, have a scent, so handle them like toiletries: store them with your food and scented items in the container or locker the park requires, never in your tent or pack. The NPS also says rules differ by park, so check with the park before you go.

Arnica Infused Organic CBD Salve Stick

FAQ

What is the best CBD for hikers and backpackers?

A small THC-free broad-spectrum oil is our pick: one 30 mL bottle, no refrigeration, no mixing, and no THC to explain when you cross state lines. The botanCBD 500mg THC-free broad-spectrum drops fit that. Start at 10 to 25 mg and talk to your doctor first.

Do CBD drops need refrigeration on the trail?

No. Ours are hemp extract in organic coconut-derived MCT oil and do not need a fridge. Keep the bottle out of direct sun and hot cars, and tuck it in a zip bag in case the cap loosens.

Can I bring CBD into a national park?

Hemp CBD at or under 0.3% delta-9 THC is federally legal, but federal land has its own rules. We did not find an nps.gov page that answers it, so ask the park before you go and keep the product in its labeled packaging.

Should I keep CBD with my food in bear country?

Handle it like a scented item. The National Park Service says bears consider anything with a scent to be food (nps.gov, checked October 2026). Follow the park's container or locker rules for food and toiletries, and store your bottle the same way.

Is the salve stick good for feet on a long hike?

It is a twist-up stick of 750mg total-spectrum hemp extract with arnica, made for skin only, never broken skin. It currently reads sold out, so check the product page. It is not a substitute for good socks and fitted boots.

Can I take CBD across state lines when I hike?

Federally, hemp CBD at or under 0.3% delta-9 THC is legal, and we ship to all 50 states. State rules still vary, so check our CBD laws page for the states on your route.
