Why small dogs need a different bottle
A 7 lb dog and a 70 lb dog do not need the same bottle. Large-dog servings are measured in droppers. A toy breed's serving is a few milligrams, and on a high-strength bottle that can be a fraction of one drop. You cannot measure that honestly. A low-strength pet oil lets you count drops and repeat the same amount every day.
That is why we like the 500mg Furry Friends oil for small dogs: 16.7 mg per mL, so a full dropper (about 1 mL) holds about 17 mg and you will almost never use one. Our large-dog page covers the bigger end of the range. This page is the mirror of it.
Weight-based math in drops
A common published starting guideline is about 0.2 mg of CBD per pound of body weight (iHeartDogs, checked October 2026, iheartdogs.com/how-much-cbd-should-i-give-a-8-lb-dog). On that guideline a 5 lb dog starts near 1 mg, a 10 lb dog near 2 mg, and a 20 lb dog near 4 mg. It is a starting point from a pet publisher, not a veterinary dose, and we cannot tell you your dog's number.
To turn milligrams into drops, count the drops your own dropper gives per mL. Many droppers give around 20, which would make one drop a little under 1 mg at 16.7 mg per mL. Check yours by dropping into a measured spoon. Start at the low end, give the same amount for several days, and change one thing at a time. Your vet can set the real number.
Picky eaters: put it on food
Small dogs can be stubborn about a dropper in the mouth. Put the drops on a spoonful of their regular food, a lick of plain wet food, or a small piece of a snack they already like, and make sure the whole bite gets eaten. The bacon flavor helps. Do not mix it into a full bowl they may leave half finished, because then you do not know what they got.
Keep the routine boring. Same time, same food, same count. If your dog refuses the food with the drops on it, do not coax or force it. Skip the day and try a different carrier tomorrow.
Why human oil is the wrong tool
Human oils are built for adult servings. Ours are no exception: a 500mg human bottle is about 17 mg per full dropper, and the flavors come from essential oils like Peruvian lime and fresh mint, which are not made for pets. The full-spectrum oil carries trace THC. Dogs are more sensitive to THC than people, and a small dog has the least room for error.
The pet bottle was made for the animal: THC-free, a flavor that is safe for dogs, and a strength that suits small servings. If a product is not labeled for pets, we do not give it to ours.
What to watch for and when to stop
After a first serving, watch your dog for a few hours and then for the next day. Stop and call your vet if you see vomiting, loose stool, unusual sleepiness, wobbliness, or anything that is not normal for your dog. Do not raise the amount to see whether the problem goes away.
Tell your vet before you start, especially if your dog takes any medication or is very young or very old, or if your dog has a medical history. We cannot promise any effect for your dog, and the research on CBD in dogs is still early. Every batch has a third-party COA at /coas, and we send the matching PDF on request.
Organic CBD Oil Oral Drops - THC Free Broad Spectrum
Our human THC-free oil is not a small-dog product. We list it only for the household: if you take CBD yourself, keep the two bottles separate and do not share a dropper.
FAQ
What is the best CBD for small dogs under 20 lb?
A THC-free pet oil with a low concentration, so a small serving is a few drops. We recommend Furry Friends 500mg (16.7 mg per mL, 0.0% THC, bacon flavor, veterinarian-formulated, $25). Talk to your vet before you start.
How many drops of CBD oil should a small dog get?
We cannot give your dog a dose. One published guideline is about 0.2 mg per pound (iHeartDogs, checked October 2026), which is near 2 mg for a 10 lb dog. At 16.7 mg per mL, count the drops your dropper gives per mL, start at the low end, and let your vet set the number.
Can I give my small dog my own CBD oil?
We do not recommend it. Human oils are built for adult servings, the flavors use essential oils, and the full-spectrum oil has trace THC. Use a THC-free product labeled for pets.
What if my small dog will not take the oil?
Put the drops on a spoonful of their regular food or on a small piece of a snack they already like, and make sure they eat all of it. If they refuse, skip the day. Do not force the dropper.
Why does THC-free matter for a small dog?
Dogs are more sensitive to THC than people, and a small dog has less body weight to spread it across. Furry Friends is 0.0% THC and every batch has a third-party COA you can ask for.
When should I stop giving CBD to my dog?
Stop and call your vet if you see vomiting, loose stool, unusual sleepiness, wobbliness, or anything out of the ordinary. Do not increase the amount to see whether it passes.
