Why working dogs need a different checklist
A pet that sleeps on the couch and a dog that moves cattle, flushes birds, runs an agility course or guides a handler are fed, stored for and scheduled differently. The oil is the same question. The context is not. The bottle rides in a truck, a barn office or a field bag. The dog may work six days and rest one. The person holding the leash may answer to a trainer, a club or an organization.
So our checklist is short. No THC. A serving you can calculate from weight. Something the dog will eat from the bowl. A batch report you can look at. A veterinarian who knows the dog's workload and anything else the dog takes. If a brand cannot give you those five, move on.
An active-day routine: on the food, after the work
The simplest routine is the one you will keep. Measure the serving with the dropper, put it on the evening meal, stir it in, and let the dog eat after the day is done. Pet oil on food is easy to repeat, and it keeps the serving tied to a moment that already happens every day.
Start low and stay there for a week before you change anything. Use the weight-based calculator below as a starting point, then ask your veterinarian to confirm the number. Our bottle is 16.7 mg per mL, which makes a vet's number easy to translate into drops. We do not publish a one-size serving, and we would not trust a brand that does.
Heat, trucks and barns: how to store it
Hemp oil in MCT carrier does not love a dashboard in July. Keep the bottle in a cool, dark spot, such as a kitchen cabinet or a house pantry, and not in a cab, a trailer tack box or an unheated shop that swings from freezing to hot. Cap it tight after every use and wipe the dropper.
If the oil sat somewhere hot, smell it and look at it. A bottle that smells off or has changed color is not worth the risk. Replace it and keep the bottle at home instead of in the work bag. Pack only what you need for travel days, in the shade.
Working day or rest day: when to skip
There is no rule that says a dog needs a serving every day. Many owners keep it to the evening routine and skip it on days the dog is judged, tested, sedated, travelling oddly or just off. Skip it if the dog has a new medication, a vet procedure on the calendar or any stomach upset. Ask your veterinarian before the next serving.
We also will not promise anything about performance. A 2021 study in Frontiers in Veterinary Science fed CBD-containing chews to 30 shelter dogs and reported no change in their daily voluntary activity. It is one small study, and we read it as a reason to skip the performance talk. This is a daily routine item, not an edge.
A note for service dog handlers
If your dog is a service dog, check with the program or trainer that placed it and with your veterinarian before you add anything. Some programs have written rules on supplements, and a dog that works in public has a lot riding on a steady routine. Do not introduce a new product the week before a public access test, a certification or a big trip.
A THC-free product is the floor, not the finish line. We cannot speak for any organization's policy, and we are not a substitute for your dog's vet or trainer. If their answer is no, the answer is no.
Organic CBD Oil Oral Drops - THC Free Broad Spectrum
This is a human product, so we do not suggest it for the dog. It is here for the handler: THC-free oil for the person who is up at 4 a.m. for chores, with a COA on request.
FAQ
What is the best CBD for working dogs?
A THC-free CBD oil made for pets, dosed by body weight and mixed into food, with a third-party batch report. Ours is Furry Friends: 500mg broad-spectrum, 0.0% THC, 16.7 mg/mL, bacon flavor, veterinarian-formulated. Ask your veterinarian about the serving before you start.
Can I give my herding or farm dog human CBD oil?
We do not recommend it. Human oils differ in strength and some contain trace THC. Our pet oil is THC-free and has a known mg per mL for weight-based serving. Use the pet product and ask your veterinarian for the number.
Does CBD improve a working dog's performance?
We make no performance claims. A small 2021 study in Frontiers in Veterinary Science found CBD-containing chews did not change daily voluntary activity in 30 dogs. Be wary of any brand promising an athletic edge.
How should I store CBD oil for a dog that travels or works outdoors?
Keep it in a cool, dark place at home, capped tight. Do not leave it in a truck cab, trailer or barn that swings hot and cold. If it smells or looks different from when you opened it, replace it.
Should I give CBD on a working day or a rest day?
That is a question for your veterinarian. Many owners use it only in the evening routine on the food, after the work. Skip it before a vet procedure, with any new medication, or if the dog has an upset stomach.
Is CBD okay for a service dog?
Ask the program or trainer that placed the dog and your veterinarian first. Some programs have written supplement rules. Choose THC-free, and do not start anything new right before a public access test or a certification.
