CBD Drops vs CBD Oral Spray: Dose Control, Taste, and Price
Side by side
| Dropper Drops | Oral Spray | |
|---|---|---|
| How you dose | Fill the dropper to the line you want | Count pumps |
| mg per drop vs per spray | Our 500mg bottle is about 17 mg per full dropper; 1,500mg is about 50 mg | Set by the brand; read the label, because some list only total mg per bottle |
| Dose precision | Adjustable in small steps, like half a dropper | Fixed steps; the smallest dose is one pump |
| Taste | Strongest hemp taste, since you hold it under the tongue | Often flavored heavily; a fine mist can spread across the mouth |
| Speed | Held under the tongue, then swallowed | Sprayed inside the cheek or under the tongue, then swallowed; no format difference we can show you |
| Travel | Glass dropper bottle can leak or break | Small, one-handed, rarely drips |
| Mess | Oil can run down the dropper or bottle | Cleaner, though a spray can miss the mouth |
| Price per mg | Ours runs $0.0275 to $0.07 per mg depending on bottle size | One spray we checked, Resynate, was $0.05 to $0.06 per mg (October 2026) |
| Label to check | mg per dropper and the batch lab report | mg per spray, pumps per bottle and the batch lab report |
Pick by use case
- You want to set your own serving size and change it in small steps
- You want the lowest price per mg, which usually means a bigger bottle
- You do not mind a dropper and a bottle that stays upright
- You want a THC-free option with several strengths to choose from
- You want a pocket-size bottle you can use in one hand
- You like a fixed, countable serving and a cleaner mouth feel
- You mind the oily feel of a dropper and the drips that come with it
- You will read the label for mg per spray before you buy
What drops and spray have in common
Both are what Consumer Reports calls tinctures: hemp extract diluted in an oil such as coconut oil, "taken by dropper or spray, straight into your mouth." That is from their CBD guide, which we read in October 2026. The extract can be the same, the carrier can be the same, and the milligrams can be the same. Only the bottle top is different.
That is why we do not say one format is better. If a spray and a dropper bottle each hold 1,000mg of the same extract, they hold the same amount of CBD. What changes is how you measure a serving out of it.
Dose control: a dropper you choose, a spray you count
A dropper holds a set volume when full, and you can stop short of the line. On our bottles a full dropper is about 17 mg on the 500mg size, 50 mg on the 1,500mg size, 100 mg on the 3,000mg size and 200 mg on the 6,000mg size. A half dropper is half of that. Most adults start at 10 to 25 mg, so on the 500mg bottle that is roughly a half to a full dropper.
A spray is a pump with a fixed output, so you count pumps. That is easy to repeat, and it is tidy. The catch is that the label has to tell you what a pump holds. Consumer Reports warns that it can be hard to know how much CBD you are getting from a dropper or a spray when a bottle shows only total CBD, and suggests doing the math per dose yourself.
We checked one spray brand to see how this looks in practice. The Resynate CBD Oral Spray page (checked October 2026) lists a 500mg size for $30 and a 1000mg size for $50. The page text we read did not give mg per spray or bottle volume, so you would have to find that on the box. If a spray label does not state it, skip it.
Taste, speed and travel
Taste is where drops lose. Held under the tongue, an oil tastes like the hemp it is. Ours use real essential oil for flavor, Peruvian lime or fresh mint, and a Natural option with none. Sprays are often flavored too, and a fine mist spreads over the mouth, which some people find easier and some do not.
On speed, both formats are taken the same way: held in the mouth for a bit, then swallowed. Consumer Reports quotes a researcher suggesting you hold a dose under the tongue for 30 seconds, or use a spray on the inside of the cheeks. We have not read a head-to-head study of drops against spray, so we will not tell you one is faster.
Travel favors the spray. It is small and does not need to stay upright. A glass dropper bottle can leak in a bag, so keep it in a zip bag and keep it cool.
Price per mg
Divide the price by the total milligrams. On the Resynate spray page we read, that is $30 for 500mg, or $0.06 per mg, and $50 for 1000mg, or $0.05 per mg. Our drops, in the same math: the full-spectrum 500mg is $30 ($0.06 per mg) and the 1,500mg is $65 (about $0.043). The THC-free broad-spectrum runs $35 for 500mg ($0.07), $70 for 1,500mg ($0.047), $110 for 3,000mg ($0.037) and $165 for 6,000mg ($0.0275).
So the bottle size matters more than the format. Our larger drop bottles come out cheaper per mg than the spray we checked. Our smallest bottle does not, and a spray may suit a first try. One brand is not the whole spray market, so run the same division on whatever you are comparing.
Where botanCBD sits, plainly
We make drops and we do not make a spray. Our drops are hemp extract in organic coconut-derived MCT oil, taken under the tongue. We do not market them as nano CBD. Every batch is third-party tested, and the report is at /coas.
If you want to try the drops, the THC-free broad-spectrum drops are the pick when you want no THC, and they come in four strengths. The full-spectrum drops carry trace THC under 0.3%. Our tincture vs softgel comparison covers another format choice.
FAQ
What is the difference between CBD drops and CBD oral spray?
The delivery. Both are hemp extract in a carrier oil, taken by mouth. Drops come with a dropper, so you choose the amount. A spray gives a fixed amount per pump, so you count pumps. Strength depends on the milligrams in the bottle, not the format.
Are CBD drops or spray more accurate?
A dropper lets you adjust in small steps, such as half a dropper. A spray is repeatable but only in whole pumps, and only if the label states mg per spray. Consumer Reports notes that a label showing only total CBD makes the per-dose amount hard to know in either format.
How many mg is one spray of CBD?
It depends on the brand and the bottle strength, so read the label. Some labels list only total mg per bottle, in which case you have to divide by the number of pumps. If you cannot find mg per spray, we would not buy it.
Which is cheaper, CBD drops or CBD spray?
Compare price per mg. One spray brand we checked in October 2026, Resynate, was $0.05 to $0.06 per mg. Our drops run $0.0275 to $0.07 per mg, with the larger bottles cheapest. Bottle size matters more than format.
Does CBD spray work faster than drops?
We have not read a head-to-head study, so we cannot say. Both are held in the mouth briefly and then swallowed. Consumer Reports quotes a researcher saying a dose held under the tongue for 30 seconds, or a spray on the inside of the cheeks, speeds things up compared with swallowing right away.
Do CBD drops or spray taste better?
Sprays are often flavored more heavily, and drops taste more like the oil. Ours come in Natural, Fresh Mint and Peruvian Lime, with real essential oil for flavor. If taste is the deciding factor, mint is the easiest place to start.
Does botanCBD sell a CBD oral spray?
No. We make oil drops in full-spectrum and THC-free broad-spectrum versions, taken with a dropper under the tongue. Talk to your doctor before starting any hemp product, and start with a small serving.
