CBD for Cats vs CBD for Dogs: Same Bottle, Different Rules

Updated How we edit these guides
Cats compared with Dogs on size and metabolism, thc sensitivity.

Side by side

CatsDogs
Size and metabolismSmall bodies, and a liver with limited glucuronidation, one of the main routes the body uses to clear plant compoundsWider size range, and a liver that clears plant compounds more readily than a cat's
THC sensitivitySensitive; THC clears slowly, so a zero-THC product is the only sensible choiceSensitive too, and dogs get into things; a zero-THC product is the only sensible choice
What the research showsMuch thinner than for dogs; in one 12-week study cats absorbed less CBD from a fish-oil capsuleMost pet CBD research so far has been done in dogs, mostly in small trials
Flavor acceptancePicky; many cats refuse anything that smells off, and a bacon flavor may or may not workUsually easy; a bacon-flavored oil goes on food or straight into the mouth
How to give itA few drops on a small amount of wet food, or a measured drop on a paw or the inside of the cheekOn food, or a measured dropper squirted along the inside of the cheek
Serving math by weightSmall amounts: our pet oil is 16.7 mg per mL, so even one full dropper is a lot for a small catScales with weight: 16.7 mg per mL, so a vet gives you a mL amount for your dog's weight

Pick by use case

Pick Cats if…
  • You have a cat, a pet-labeled THC-free oil, and a vet who has said yes
  • You are willing to start with a very small amount and wait several days before changing anything
  • You can keep a log of appetite, energy and any licking or head shaking
  • You will stop and call your vet at the first sign something is off
Pick Dogs if…
  • You have a dog, a pet-labeled THC-free oil, and a vet who has said yes
  • Your dog takes food well, so the oil can go on a meal
  • You want a serving you can scale with a vet's guidance as your dog's weight changes
  • You will stop and call your vet if stools turn loose or your dog seems off

Why a cat is not a small dog

A cat's liver is built differently. Cats are short on a set of liver enzymes (the UGTs) that help clear many plant compounds, so those compounds can linger longer than they do in a dog or a person. Vets have long known this from common household items. It is also why we say plainly: do not give a cat anything made for people, and do not guess at a serving. A writer at Hanf Magazin (April 2026) summarizes the cat's glucuronidation gap well; we read it, but it is a magazine column, not a study, so your vet is the better source.

A 12-week study in Animals (Deabold and colleagues, 2019) gave 8 beagles and 8 domestic shorthair cats a hemp-based product twice a day and followed them. As reported by dvm360, dogs reached a peak CBD level of 301 ng/mL and cats 43 ng/mL. The dogs ate a soft chew and the cats a fish-oil capsule, so the two animals did not get the same product, which the researchers noted may have played a part. Cats also showed more licking and head shaking. It was a small study of animals with no known problems, and it tells us to go slowly with cats, nothing more.

The same bottle: what makes a pet product a pet product

Whichever animal you have, check four things. The label says it is made for pets. The THC reads zero or not detected. There is a batch lab report you can read. And the flavor is something a pet should eat. Our pet CBD oil is 500mg broad-spectrum, 0.0% THC, bacon-flavored, veterinarian-formulated, 16.7 mg per mL, labeled for dogs and cats. Batch lab reports are at /coas.

Do not borrow a human bottle. Our people oils are flavored with real mint or lime essential oil, and some also carry trace THC. Essential oils are another thing cats clear slowly. Our dog CBD vs human CBD oil comparison and pet CBD vs human CBD cover why.

Serving math, without the guessing

We do not publish a serving by weight, and we will not pretend a chart on a website knows your animal. What we can give you is the arithmetic. The pet bottle holds 500mg in 30 mL, which is 16.7 mg per mL. If your vet says a number of mg, divide by 16.7 to get mL. If your vet says mL, multiply by 16.7 to get mg. Ask for the amount in writing so you are not working from memory.

Start low and go slow, and with a cat go slower. Change one thing at a time, wait several days between changes, and write down what you see. Cats hide how they feel, so a log of appetite, energy and grooming helps your vet more than your memory will.

What we do not know

We do not know the right serving for your cat or your dog. Nobody can without knowing the animal. Pet CBD research is early, mostly small, and mostly in dogs. We cannot tell you what CBD will or will not do for a pet, and we make no claims about it. Our pet oil is a hemp supplement, not a medicine.

If your pet takes any prescription, tell your vet before starting. The liver clears both CBD and many medicines, and your vet should know what is going in. If you are still deciding, the honest first step is a vet visit, not a bottle.

FAQ

Is CBD for cats the same as CBD for dogs?

The product can be the same. The animals are not. A THC-free pet-labeled oil like ours is labeled for both, but cats clear many plant compounds more slowly than dogs, so a cat needs a smaller amount, a slower start and a vet's go-ahead first.

Can I give my cat the CBD made for my dog?

If it is pet-labeled, THC-free and your vet agrees, the same bottle can work. What changes is the amount and the pace, not the oil. Never give a cat a product made for people, since those can carry THC and essential oils.

Why are cats more sensitive to CBD than dogs?

Cats have limited glucuronidation, a main liver route for clearing plant compounds. In a 2019 study reported by dvm360, cats also absorbed less CBD than dogs from the form they were given. Together that means go slowly and ask your vet.

How much CBD should I give my cat or dog?

Ask your veterinarian. We do not publish a serving by weight. Our pet oil is 16.7 mg per mL, so once your vet gives you a number, divide mg by 16.7 to get mL.

Does pet CBD need to be THC-free?

Yes, that is what we would buy for any pet. THC is a bigger concern for animals than for most people, and cats clear it slowly. Our pet oil is 0.0% THC and the batch lab report is at /coas.

What are the signs I should stop giving my pet CBD?

Stop and call your vet if your pet vomits, has loose stool, drools, walks unsteadily, is unusually sleepy, will not eat, or in a cat shows a lot of licking, head shaking or hiding.

Will my cat even take bacon-flavored oil?

Some will, some will not. Cats are picky. Start with a tiny amount mixed into a bit of wet food. If your cat refuses, do not force it, and ask your vet about another way to give it.
