Pick by use case

Pick CBD Tincture (traditional) if…
  • You want a very long shelf life and plan to keep a bottle for a long time
  • You do not mind a sharp taste, or you will mix it into a drink
  • You would rather avoid a carrier oil, such as coconut-derived MCT
Pick CBD Oil (carrier-oil based) if…
  • You want a smoother, milder taste with no alcohol
  • You want a short ingredient list you can read in ten seconds
  • You like the option of natural flavor from a real essential oil, like mint or lime

The old meaning of tincture

A tincture is a very old way to make a plant extract. You soak the plant in alcohol, strain it, and keep the liquid. Herbalists have done it for centuries with all kinds of plants. A traditional CBD tincture follows that method with hemp.

CBD oil is a different method. The extract is made first, then it is diluted into a carrier oil like MCT, which is a fat from coconut. Nothing about that needs alcohol. Because, a brand that sells both, describes the difference the same way on its own page (checked October 2026): an alcohol base for a tincture, an oil base for an oil.

Why the words got mixed up

Both come in a small glass bottle with a dropper. Both are taken the same way. To a shopper they look identical, so brands use "tincture" and "oil" as loose synonyms. One major health site's 2026 best-CBD-oil list (checked October 2026) puts a "tincture" and several "oils" in one set of picks and uses "oil drops and tinctures" in the same heading. We would rather say it plainly: there is no rule about which word a brand may use on the front.

The sources do not agree on every detail either. One page we read says oil tends to have a strong flavor, another says tinctures taste bitter from alcohol. We take that as a sign that the word on the label tells you less than the ingredient list does.

How to tell what you are holding

Turn the bottle around. Under supplement facts or ingredients, look at what comes after the hemp extract. Alcohol, ethanol or glycerin means a traditional tincture. MCT oil, coconut oil, olive oil or hemp seed oil means an oil. If the list names neither, ask the brand.

Then check the same things you would check on any bottle: the milligrams of CBD in the whole bottle, the serving size per dropper, whether the spectrum is full, broad or isolate, and whether there is a current third-party lab report for the batch. Those matter far more than the name. Our batch lab reports are on our COA page.

What botanCBD makes

Ours are oil, and we call them drops. Each is hemp extract and organic coconut-derived MCT oil, with a real essential oil for flavor (Peruvian lime or fresh mint) or none at all in Natural. They are taken under the tongue, and we do not market them as nano CBD. There is no alcohol in them.

If you want the THC removed, our THC-free broad-spectrum drops start at $35 for 500mg in a 30 mL bottle, and our full-spectrum drops start at $30 and carry trace THC under 0.3%. One full dropper of the 500mg bottle is about 17 mg of CBD. Most adults start low at 10 to 25 mg and go slowly. Talk to your doctor first, especially if you take medication.

FAQ

Is CBD oil the same as a CBD tincture?

Not originally, but often today. Traditionally a tincture is hemp steeped in alcohol and CBD oil is hemp extract in a carrier oil like MCT. Many brands now call oil-based dropper bottles "tinctures" too. Check the ingredient list: alcohol or glycerin means a traditional tincture, and a carrier oil means an oil.

What is the difference between CBD tincture and CBD oil?

The base. A tincture uses alcohol (sometimes glycerin) to carry the hemp extract. An oil uses a carrier oil such as MCT, olive or hemp seed oil. That changes taste, feel and shelf life, but not the amount of CBD, which is set by the milligrams on the label.

Does a tincture work faster than an oil?

We do not know, and we will not claim it. Some of the pages we read say alcohol makes a tincture absorb faster. We found no study on those pages that settles it for the products sold today. How fast anything works varies from person to person, so start with a low serving size.

Is a CBD tincture stronger than CBD oil?

Not by the format. Strength is the milligrams of CBD in the bottle, divided by the bottle size. A 1,500mg bottle in 30 mL holds the same CBD whether the base is alcohol or MCT oil. Compare mg per mL and check the lab report.

Is botanCBD oil a tincture?

Ours is oil. It is hemp extract in organic coconut-derived MCT oil, with no alcohol, sold as drops and taken under the tongue. Some people would call that a tincture because of the dropper. Either way, the ingredient list tells you exactly what is in it.

Which lasts longer on the shelf, tincture or oil?

A traditional tincture usually keeps longer, because alcohol acts as a preservative, a point Because makes on its own page (checked October 2026). An oil keeps well if you store it cool and dark and keep the cap on. In both cases go by the date on the bottle.

What should I look for when buying either one?

The base on the ingredient list, the total mg of CBD and the size of the bottle, the spectrum (full, broad or isolate), and a current third-party lab report for the batch. If a brand cannot show the report, the front label is a promise only.
