CBD vs HHC: What Hexahydrocannabinol Is and Why We Don't Sell It
Side by side
| CBD | HHC | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it comes from | Occurs naturally in the hemp plant and is extracted from it | Found only in trace amounts in nature; products are typically made by hydrogenating THC from hemp |
| Intoxicating? | No; it does not cause a high | Yes; reported as milder than delta-9 THC, though one form may be comparable |
| Federal and state legality | Hemp CBD at or under 0.3% delta-9 THC is federally legal; states add their own rules | Disputed federally; a number of states ban it as a synthetic or converted cannabinoid |
| Drug test | THC-free products have no THC to detect; full spectrum has trace THC, so no guarantee | Likely to cause a positive result per one major health system; others say unclear |
| Research | Studied for years, though many open questions remain | Very little; its effects and safety are not well studied |
| Lab testing and COAs | Reputable brands publish a batch COA | No testing requirement for strength or purity; quality varies by maker |
| How it is sold | Oils, topicals, softgels, gummies | Gummies, vape cartridges, tinctures, flower |
| What botanCBD sells | Yes: full spectrum and THC-free broad spectrum drops | No; we do not make or sell it |
Pick by use case
- You want a hemp product that does not intoxicate
- You want a batch lab report you can read before you buy
- You need a THC-free option and will read the COA to confirm
- You want a brand that sells one thing and explains it
- You are an adult who knowingly wants an intoxicating cannabinoid and your state allows it
- You accept that research is thin and quality varies
- You are not subject to drug testing at work or elsewhere
- You will buy it somewhere else, because we do not sell it
What HHC is
HHC is hexahydrocannabinol. Its structure is close to THC, with extra hydrogen atoms added. Trace amounts exist in the cannabis plant, but the HHC on store shelves is typically made in a lab: a producer starts with hemp-derived material, converts it to THC or delta-9 THC, and hydrogenates it. Cleveland Clinic describes that hemp starting point as a way producers try to work around federal limits on conventional cannabis (checked October 2026).
It binds to the same receptors as THC. Cleveland Clinic describes the high as milder than THC's, while noting that one more potent form may feel comparable, and that a given product can be a mix of strong and weak forms. That is one reason two HHC products can feel nothing alike.
Is HHC legal?
It depends on where you live, and we are not lawyers. Because HHC is usually made from hemp, some sellers argue it falls under the 2018 Farm Bill. Others read it as a converted or synthetic cannabinoid. A legal glossary we read (checked October 2026) calls the situation murky and says states that ban delta-8 or synthetic cannabinoids typically cover HHC too.
Several states have written bans aimed at synthetic or converted cannabinoids, and Alabama is one reason this comes up on our state pages. Rules change often. Check our state-by-state CBD law pages and your state's own agency before you buy anything, and ask a lawyer if the answer matters to you.
Does HHC show up on a drug test?
Nobody can promise either answer. Cleveland Clinic says how HHC breaks down in the body is not well studied, but that it will likely trigger a positive result on a drug test (checked October 2026). A legal glossary we read says it may not trigger standard screens, and adds that sellers claim this more confidently than the science supports.
Those two sources disagree, and we are not going to pick the convenient one. If you are tested, consider HHC a risk. For CBD, THC-free products have no THC to detect, but we still cannot guarantee anyone's result, and full-spectrum products carry trace THC. Talk to your employer or testing provider first.
Why we do not sell it
We are a CBD store. Our oils are hemp extract in organic coconut-derived MCT oil, with every batch third-party tested and the COA on request or at /coas. HHC is a different kind of product: intoxicating, lightly studied, with no requirement that makers test strength or purity. Cleveland Clinic also notes that making it involves hazardous chemicals that can linger in the final product.
If you want a product with no THC, our THC-free broad-spectrum drops have THC removed, and the COA reads ND or below the limit of quantitation. Read the COA for the batch you buy. If you want something intoxicating, the honest answer is that none of our products are that.
FAQ
What is the difference between CBD and HHC?
CBD is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid that occurs naturally in hemp. HHC (hexahydrocannabinol) is an intoxicating cannabinoid that is typically made in a lab by hydrogenating THC from hemp. They differ in origin, effect, legality and how much is known about them.
Is HHC the same as THC?
No, but they are close relatives. HHC is a hydrogenated form of THC and acts on the same receptors. Cleveland Clinic describes its high as milder than THC's, though one form may be comparable (checked October 2026).
Is HHC legal?
It is disputed and varies by state. Some sellers say it is covered by the 2018 Farm Bill because it comes from hemp, while a number of states ban it as a synthetic or converted cannabinoid. This is not legal advice. See our CBD law pages and check your state's rules.
Will HHC show up on a drug test?
It might. Cleveland Clinic says it will likely trigger a positive result, while another source says it may not trip standard screens. The science is limited, so assume it is a risk if you are tested.
Is HHC safe?
Not enough is known to say. Cleveland Clinic notes it is not well studied and that makers are not required to test products for strength or purity. If you have questions about any intoxicating product, talk to a doctor.
Does botanCBD sell HHC?
No. We sell hemp CBD only: full-spectrum drops with trace THC under 0.3% and THC-free broad-spectrum drops with THC removed. We do not make or sell HHC, delta-8 or any intoxicating cannabinoid.
Can CBD products contain HHC?
A properly made CBD product should not. The way to know is the batch COA from an independent lab, which lists the cannabinoids found. If a brand will not show you one, that is a reason to look elsewhere.
