Pick by use case

Pick Full-Spectrum (trace THC) if…
  • You are asking your veterinarian about it and they have a reason to point you to full-spectrum
  • You are comparing oils for yourself, not your dog
  • You want to understand what trace THC means on a human label
Pick THC-Free (broad spectrum) if…
  • You want the cautious default for a dog, especially a small one
  • You want a product made for pets, with a flavor and a mg per mL figure
  • You want the lab report to show no THC
  • You live with a dog and also use human CBD in the house

Why dogs are different on THC

THC acts on CB1 receptors. The Merck Veterinary Manual (full review February 2026) says interspecies differences in receptor distribution likely explain the variation in sensitivity to THC, and that dogs have a higher concentration of CB1 receptors in the cerebellum and medulla oblongata. That is the part of the brain behind balance and some body functions, and it is why vets describe wobbliness and lethargy in dogs who get too much THC.

The AKC, in its canine CBD guide updated April 2026, says THC is poisonous to dogs. Its list of signs includes impaired coordination, lethargy, vomiting, dribbling urine and a slow heart rate. It also notes that most dogs recover, but that it can be life-threatening. Those pages describe edibles and marijuana. They do not test trace THC in a CBD oil, and we will not pretend they do.

What trace THC means on a human label

Hemp CBD at or under 0.3% delta-9 THC is federally legal. That is a legal line drawn for people, not a safety line drawn for dogs. A dose that is nothing to an adult can be a lot more to a small body.

Here is what we do not know. We do not know a trace amount that is safe for every dog, and we have not found a source that states one. The Merck manual also says variable product consistency and lack of regulatory oversight make exposures hard to assess. When the honest answer is we do not know, we pick the option with no THC in it.

Why we default to THC-free for dogs

Our pet oil is a 500mg broad-spectrum CBD oil with 0.0% THC, an AAFCO-approved bacon flavor, veterinarian-formulated, at 16.7 mg per mL. It is $25. Broad spectrum keeps the plant's other cannabinoids and terpenes and leaves THC out.

We do not give a dog dose here. Weight, age and health change what is right, and that call belongs to your veterinarian. Our dogs vs human CBD oil comparison and pet vs human CBD go through the formula differences. We do not recommend giving a dog our human full-spectrum drops.

How to read a pet CBD label

Ask for the batch lab report and look for the THC line. THC-free should read ND (not detected) or below the limit of quantitation. The AKC cites a 2019 study of 13 CBD oils made for animals that found label information that did not match what was inside, so a lab report you can read matters more than the front of the bottle.

Keep human products out of reach. The AKC points out that edibles can carry other things dangerous to dogs, like chocolate or artificial sweeteners. If your dog gets into a THC product, call your veterinarian right away. Do not wait to see how it goes.

FAQ

Is full-spectrum CBD oil safe for dogs?

We do not recommend it. Full-spectrum oil carries trace THC, and the Merck Veterinary Manual says dogs have a higher concentration of CB1 receptors in the cerebellum and medulla oblongata. It also says the FDA has not approved any full-spectrum product for veterinary patients. We default to THC-free for dogs. Ask your veterinarian before starting any hemp product.

Is THC-free CBD better for dogs than full-spectrum?

It is the more cautious choice, and it is the one we make for pets. THC-free (broad-spectrum) oil leaves out the compound dogs are most sensitive to. Product quality varies, so a batch lab report and your veterinarian still matter.

Why are dogs more sensitive to THC than humans?

The Merck Veterinary Manual says dogs have a higher concentration of CB1 receptors in the cerebellum and medulla oblongata, which likely accounts for ataxia and cardiovascular and respiratory effects in dogs. The AKC calls THC poisonous to dogs. Small body size makes the same amount weigh more.

What is the difference between full-spectrum and broad-spectrum CBD for dogs?

Full-spectrum keeps trace THC along with the plant's other cannabinoids and terpenes. Broad-spectrum keeps the other cannabinoids and terpenes and removes the THC. For a dog, that missing THC is the whole point. Our [full-spectrum vs broad-spectrum guide](/compare/full-spectrum-vs-broad-spectrum-cbd) covers the human side.

Can I give my dog my own CBD oil?

We do not recommend it. Human oils are made and dosed for adults and our full-spectrum drops carry trace THC. If you want to give your dog CBD, use a product made for pets with 0.0% THC, and ask your veterinarian first.

What does botanCBD sell for dogs?

One product: Organic Pet CBD Oil Drops for dogs and cats, 500mg broad-spectrum, 0.0% THC, AAFCO-approved bacon flavor, veterinarian-formulated, 16.7 mg per mL, $25. We do not give a dog dose. Your veterinarian sets that.

What should I do if my dog eats a THC product?

Call your veterinarian or an animal poison control line right away. The AKC says signs usually show one to three hours after eating, and in some cases up to 12 hours. Do not wait for symptoms.
